Volvo XC90 Sport SE to Debut in London

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Volvo XC90According to Volvo, customers have been clamoring for a more dynamic take on their XC90 SUV. The automaker has complied, and the future looks good.

Next week at London’s British Motor Show, the public gets its first look at the Volvo XC90 SE Sport, a new take on the Swedish marque’s SUV that applies suspension and appearance mods to give it a more dynamic attitude on-road. The suspension tuning was refined in Great Britain and consists of stiffer shocks and anti-roll bars to give the ute more bite when cornering. In addition, the speed-sensitive power steering is now more responsive. The XC90’s self-leveling system also gets tweaked to complete the suite of handling upgrades.

Visually, new Passion Red paint is added to the options checklist, and the exterior trim loses its chrome look in favor of a satin silver finish. Wheel arch extenders are added to cover new Pirelli P-Zero-shod 19″ wheels, and brushed stainless moldings trim the sills. The roof rack is deleted, but is available as a no-cost option. Inside, perforated leather sport seats keep the driver in place, and chrono-style gauges look back at him (or her) from the dash.

Power comes from Volvo’s Yamaha-built 4.4L V8, the new 3.2L V6 last seen in the LR2 / Freelander 2, or in Europe, the D5 2.4L five-cylinder turbodiesel. A six-speed automatic is available with all three engines. In addition, the diesel can be fitted with a six-speed manual.

In all, the XC90 Sport SE looks like a nice package that conveys sportiness without going overboard in the looks department.
