The collaboration between Shelby and Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) is yielding an instant collector’s Ford Shelby GT500 that builds 500 horsepower in its 5.4-liter supercharged V-8.
True to the original Shelby GT500, it will be available both as a coupe and as a convertible when it goes on sale in the summer of 2006.
“It’s one thing to put 450 horsepower in an exotic supercar,” says Shelby. “It’s another to put that much power in something as affordable as a Mustang. The fact that they not only met their goal but pushed on to 500 horsepower is a remarkable achievement.”

Ford has reportedly added a few numbers to its 2007 Shelby GT500. In addition to the 500 horsepower and 480 lbs of torque already reported, there’s a new figure (MSRP) that stands out: $42,975. That’s the top Stang’s base price tag, including charges for destination ($745) and binge drinking tariff (gas guzzler: $1,300).
“We haven’t started shipping to dealers yet, but that should begin in a couple of weeks — by July at the latest,” Ford spokesman Jim Cain said. He said Ford dealers are taking orders for the car and that the automaker expects to build 8,000-10,000 units per year.
