Other than confirming it will have V10 power, Acura announced few additional details as well. It turns out there are two prototypes under consideration, one a midengine vehicle like the current car, and the other a front-engine setup.

According to our contact in Japan, the front-engine layout is looking like the front-runner at this point. Although it will run most of the power to the rear wheels, a version of the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive currently used in the Acura RL will be used to send some of the power up front when needed.

A redesigned version of Acura’s upscale MDX midsize SUV is debuting for 2007 with more of everything: distinctive styling inside and out, a longer wheelbase, a new powertrain, higher towing capacity and mind-boggling technology. Among the noteworthy features are an optional navigation system with real-time traffic updates and a climate-control system that works with the navigation to adjust interior temperatures relative to the position of the sun.

Safety equipment now includes standard front-seat whiplash-reducing head restraints and a rollover protection system that automatically deploys head-curtain airbags if the vehicle flips.

Longer, lower and wider than the more conservative-looking model it replaces, the 2007 MDX’s sculpted exterior is both bolder and richer-looking, with a large pentagonal front grille and chiseled lines, including one that wraps uninterrupted all the way around the vehicle something you don’t see often. It bears more than a passing resemblance to its smaller sibling, the new-for-2007 RDX. The MDX shares technology with the Honda Pilot.

The interior seats seven. Like the exterior, is more stylish than before, with a new cockpit-like dashboard design that affords fairly straightforward controls that eschew the type of overly complex, screen-based interface that many luxury automakers have adopted in recent years.

The middle row is now a two-seat configuration, while a three-seat third row is on hand for the kiddies. It folds completely into the floor to maximize cargo volume without having to physically remove the seat from the vehicle.

A five-speed automatic transmission can be operated manually, if so desired. Equipped with a heavy-duty cooling system, this gearbox helps the MDX attain a 5,000-pound maximum tow rating, which is 1,500 pounds more than the outgoing version. It is on par with many truck-based models, which are typically viewed as sturdier and more utilitarian than so-called crossover SUVs like the MDX.

While the MDX isn’t built to traverse rugged terrain, it includes a version of the Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive system found in the RDX compact SUV and the RL full-size luxury sedan. It distributes the optimum amount of torque between both the front and rear wheels as well as left to right.

Stability and traction control maintain poise on treacherous roads and during emergency maneuvers. A new Trailer Stability Assist function automatically senses and counteracts oscillations between the MDX and a trailer. The suspension has been revised to deliver well-balanced ride and handling characteristics for a luxury-car feel.

Those who prefer sportier handling dynamics can choose the optional Sport Package. It includes a new Active Damper System that automatically adjusts the stiffness of the suspension. Acura says it can go from minimum to maximum force in as little as five milliseconds.

In keeping with Honda/Acura’s now streamlined options hierarchy, stand-alone factory options are not offered. Additional features can only be added through a choice of three equipment packages.

The $3,500 Technology Package comes with a 410-watt surround-sound audio system, a voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic information and a rear back-up camera for easier and safer parking. It also links the navigation system to the climate control to automatically adjust the temperature and fan speed according to the sun’s position in the sky.

The $5,600 Sport Package includes all of the above plus unique interior trim, upgraded upholstery and the Active Damper System. Meanwhile, the $2,200 Entertainment Package adds a rear-seat DVD player, 110-volt power outlet and a power-operated tailgate, but it’s only available in conjunction with either of the other two packages.

The new generation of the MDX aims straight to complete with the BMW X5 and the Porsche Cayenne. Cargo capacity and off-road capability are no longer the key metrics when contesting market share with those lithe Germans. To instill the same level of driving excitement in the MDX as is found in its new competitors, Acura’s engineers headed to Germany’s Nurburgring, which is prized for its ability to expose chinks in a car’s driving dynamics.

The new MDX’s exterior styling underwent a similarly rigorous workout. According to Frank Paluch, the chief engineer of both the original and second-generation MDX models, the goal was to provide a “stealth family package,” which the design team accomplished by lowering the visual center of the vehicle, what they call the C-line, and angling the D-pillar sharply forward to camouflage the third-row seating. Paluch adds, “The vehicle looks smaller, but it’s wider, longer, and lower.”

Until we spend time behind the wheel, we cannot say if the MDX can hang with the fast crowd—but at least it’s wearing all the right clothes. Acura is being coy about powertrain performance, but Paluch says they have aimed for best-in-class V-6 performance. When asked if that translates to 300 hp, he remarks, “that’s a difficult goal.”

It’s been 3 years since the Acura division produced any cars that carried the Type-S badge. That wait is all but over now, as Acura will be re-introducing the Type-S into the 2007 TL line up. Previous generations of the Type-S line included the TL and CL. This time around only the TL is in production, but you have a choice of a 6 speed manual gearbox or a 5 speed automatic with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters when you check the option box for Type-S. Power comes from a 3.5L V6 that makes 286 horsepower and 256 lb-ft of torque. The base TL comes with a 3.2L V6 that will propel the car to 60MPH (from a stop) in the low-7 second range.

The 2007 TL sees little changes, inside and out, to an almost perfect design. A few tweaks to the front and rear fascia are evident. The interior looks similar to the existing model: changes include new fonts on the instrument cluster, a new steering wheel (with common controls.)

For those lucky enough to purchase the Type-S, the navigation becomes standard and the interior lights are tinted red. If there is one thing holding the new TL back, it would be the FWD platform verses a RWD setup. Regardless of that, the TL Type-S is about as good as it gets for FWD performance & luxury.

Both the TL and TL Type-S get new wheels, too, with the Type-S rims reminding us of the ones found on the Nissan Altima SE-R. Frankly, we’re a bit surprised they didn’t go with a more original design. No complaints about the base TL’s new 5-spokes, which look great.

The interior incorporates new gauges, a new steering wheel, and colored ambient lighting (blue for TL, red for Type-S). The available nav system has a real-time traffic feature and also acts as the display for the car’s reverse camera. The now-expected-by-everyone iPod jack is hidden in the center console.

The Acura TL was and remains a sharp-looking car that’s been made even more attractive thanks to the availability of the performance-oriented Type S package. Aside from the additional fun now available via the loud pedal, Acura wisely left well enough alone. We’re ok with that. Now, how soon can we drive one?

RDX is 2 inches shorter in wheelbase and 8 inches shorter overall than Acura’s seven-passenger MDX. The only engine is a 240-hp turbo 4-cyl. It teams with a 5-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel paddles for manual operation. RDX has Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system that apportions power between the rear wheels to enhance cornering stability.

For the 2007 Acura RDX ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard, as are front side airbags and curtain side airbags. Also standard are dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery with heated front seats, and a 6.5-inch dashboard screen that displays audio and climate information. A Technology Package includes DVD Audio, cell phone link, and a navigation system with real-time traffic information for 30 major cities. Acura estimates RDX will start at about $30,000.

The 2006 Acura MDX offers an outstanding V6 powertrain, seven-passenger seating and an all-wheel-drive system that prevents skids almost before they happen. Neat styling, attention to detail, excellent crash protection and competitive pricing increase the appeal of this luxury SUV.

Introduced in 2001, MDX was named North American Truck of the Year by a panel of 50 independent automotive journalists. Through the five model years since, the MDX has been steadily improved in all areas.

The body has grown more rigid, allowing better vibration control and a smoother ride. Power has increased, and a more compact five-speed automatic transmission shifts even more smoothly than before. The MDX’s four-wheel-drive system was remapped to work seamlessly with a Vehicle Stability Assist system to improve handling on slippery surfaces and to enhance stability in all conditions. Side curtain airbags covering all three seating rows were added, as were tire pressure monitors. Front and rear end styling has been redone, with a more aggressive edginess. Acura has updated the optional navigation system and added a rearview camera that engages when the transmission is in reverse. A DVD entertainment system with wireless infrared headphones is available. XM Satellite Radio and Bluetooth capability for compatible cell phones come standard.

For 2006, the interior has been upgraded, and the Touring edition receives ebony-tone, Zebra woodgrain and satin-chrome accents. Otherwise, the MDX returns for 2006 much as it has been: one of the best values in the class.

The 2006 Acura MDX combines most of the virtues of the SUV genre and diminishes or eliminates most of its vices. While it’s not perfect, it’s more versatile than five-passenger luxury SUVs such as the Lexus RX 330, BMW X5 or Mercedes ML, and it retails for thousands less than comparably equipped, seven-passenger competitors such as the Volvo XC90 and Cadillac SRX. Anyone seeking comfort, performance, reliability, spaciousness, flexibility, proven safety features, environmental awareness and driving pleasure in a value-loaded package must have a look at the MDX.
