2008 Audi A5
Tuesday, October 24th, 2006
Audi is preparing a sporty new two-door and a new nameplate for model year 2008. Though by unconfirmed report, the new Audi A5 may make its debute in 2008 release and will share styling cues with the Nuvolari and Shooting Brake concepts and a platform with the next-generation A4 and Volkswagen’s forthcoming upscale coupe (or four-door coupe as the case may be). According to South Africa’s Wheels24, a soft-top A5 will replace the A4 cabrio.
Another Car Blog reports that the new Audi A5 and its four-door older brother, the A4, will feature styling that’s more along the lines of the angry-eyebrows look of the latest 3-series and IS models when they bow in 2008. Of interest to sporting types, the torque split on Quattro models will feature a heavier rear bias, which when combined with the reportedly-stiffer structure and better weight distribution could finally make the new kids the stars of the squad. Interestingly, Audi mucky-muck Martin Winterkorn says that the convertibles will stay ragtops, as retractable hardtops are apparently now too “Pontiac.”
The four-seater, which will be offered in front- and four-wheel-drive variants, is expected to reach U.S. dealers as a 2008 model. Audi also is planning a companion soft-top model that will likely replace the A4 convertible in 2008. Both cars are expected to use Audi’s 3.2-liter FSI V-6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. A range-topping RS5 could get the 420-horsepower 4.2-liter V-8.
